Monday, Jun. 23, 2003 - 1:48 pm 6 17 03 6:30a Matthew 1 This chapter covers the ancestry and birth of Jesus. Id never really paid attention to this before. I mean, its a lot like all the begats of Numbers in the Old Testament. However, one of the things I think is cool, is that Jesus step-father is descended of Ruth and Boaz. Granted, it was a long ways back in the lineage, but Boaz and Ruth were the parents of King Davids Grandfather. Whats more, Jesus step-father was descended of Solomon who was the offspring of Davids affair with Uriahs wife. Her name escapes me right now, she was the woman David saw bathing, had an affair If youre not familiar with the story, Uriah was in the army doing battle. There was a rule that said if you were in the midst of battle, you couldnt have sex with your wife. David saw Uriahs wife, slept with her and got her preggers. He called Uriah back from the war in order to have him sleep with his wife so as to make the man think Davids kid was actually his own. When Uriah obeyed the rules, David got nervous and then, lo and behold, transferred Uriah to the front where he would be killed. David then took the wife as his own. Erm, anyway I think its cool that the step-father God chose for His Son in physical form, came from some strange pairings. Ruth could very well have said to Naomi that she wasnt going to follow David could have kept his pants zipped and Solomon would not have been born. The point? Even if you have made some really nasty mistakes, God can make good out of them.
